Piet Noordijk (born May 26, 1932 in Rotterdam , † October 9, 2011 in Hellevoetsluis ) was a Dutch alto saxophonist of modern jazz .

Live and act

From 1950 to 1954 he studied clarinet at the Rotterdam Conservatory and taught himself to play the saxophone (his role model was Charlie Parker ). With his brother Kees he played in jazz clubs in the 1950s; after his military service he also appeared in American clubs in Germany. 1956 brought him Wessel Ilcken to his All-Stars . He accompanied u. a. the singers Nina Simone , Rita Reys and Betty Carter and played in a quartet with Misha Mengelberg from 1963 to 1967 and approached free jazz (from 1975 there were reunions of this quartet). Since his appearance at the Jazz à Juan festival in 1965, he has received international recognition; In 1966 he performed with Mengelberg at the Newport Jazz Festival . Then he played with Cees Slinger , Pim Jacobs , Toots Thielemans , Lee Konitz , Wynton Marsalis , Willem Breuker , Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon . From the mid-1960s he was also a saxophonist in Boy Edgar's big band and from 1978 to 1992 he was the first alto saxophonist in the Metropole Orkest . It wasn't until 1980 that he played his first album under his own name, entitled Loverman .

Most recently he performed with his own quartet and played regularly at the North Sea Jazz Festival .

Prizes and awards

In 1958 and 1959 he was named the best alto saxophonist in the readers' poll of the Dutch jazz magazine Rhythme . In 1965 he received the Wessel Ilcken Prize . In 1987 he won the Bird Award . In 2008 he was the first jazz musician to be awarded the Blijvend Applaus Prijs . In the same year he received the Edison Jazz Award for his life's work .
