Pieter Jan Leeuwerink
Pieter Jan Leeuwerink (born February 10, 1962 in Wormer , Netherlands , † September 27, 2004 in Capelle aan den IJssel ) was a Dutch volleyball player .
Between 1985 and 1989 Leeuwerink was a member of the Dutch national volleyball team 187 times , including fifth place at the 1988 Olympic Games . In the Dutch volleyball league he played for VC Wormer , Compaen and Brother / Martinus .
He was one of the initiators of the so-called Bankras model , which aimed to lead Dutch volleyball players to the top of the world through regular participation in high-class competitions and finally brought the Dutch men's team the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta .
After his active career as a player, Leeuwerink worked as a trainer at Alcom Capelle for eight years and later switched to Rijnmond Volleybal .
Pieter Jan Leeuwerink died after a serious illness at the age of 41.
