Pietro Marchitelli (* 1643 in Villa Santa Maria Province of Chieti ; † February 6, 1729 in Naples ) was an Italian composer and violinist and a representative of the Neapolitan Baroque .

Live and act

Pietro Marchitelli, later called " Petrillo ", was trained at the Conservatorio di S Maria di Loreto and when his teacher Carlo de Vincentiis died, he took over his post in the royal court chapel in Naples. He was also concertmaster at the Teatro San Borromeo from 1693 to 1706 - thus a musician at the two most important musical institutions in the city. In 1707 he became treasurer and head of the musicians of the royal court orchestra. Through Charles Burney's " General History of Music " an incident became known that Marchitelli is said to have played more virtuoso with his orchestra than Arcangelo Corelli in 1702 during his stay at the coronation celebrations in Naples, which had offended him very much, although Corelli had himself specially accompanied by Roman musicians.

Pietro Marchitelli is considered to be the teacher of his two nephews Michele Mascitti and Giovanni Sebastiano Sabatino (1667–1742). After his death, Angelo Ragazzi took over the position of concert master of the court orchestra. He died in high regard and was buried in the church "San Nicola alla Carità" in Naples. Several violins from the Amati family are said to have been in his estate .

Marchitelli composed several works for strings. Stylistically, he closely followed Corelli's guidelines, but set remarkable accents in phrasing and counterpoint . 14 “Sonate a quattro” (for three violins and basso continuo), 11 violin sonatas and 4 trio sonatas are known .
