Michele Mascitti (* 1663 or 1664 in Villa Santa Maria (at Chieti ); † 24. April 1760 in Paris ), an Italian violinist and was composer of the Baroque .

Life

He received his training from his relative Pietro Marchitelli (1643–1729), a violinist in the royal court orchestra in Naples and at the "Teatro San Bartolomeo", possibly also from Arcangelo Corelli . Mascitti found a temporary position in the royal orchestra, but was soon drawn away. First he traveled through Italy, later through all of Europe. He stayed in Germany for a long time and later in the Netherlands. It was under the protectorate of Cardinal Ottoboni and the ruling Duke of Bavaria.

From 1704 the forty-year-old finally settled in Paris and took on the Frenchized name Michel Mascitti. In 1739 he became a French citizen. The Duke of Orléans was one of his patrons, who made it possible for Mascitti to appear at the court of Versailles at an early age.

Mascitti published all of his nine sonata collections in Paris. The four concertos from Op. 7 follow Corelli's concerto grosso style . During his lifetime, Mascitti received the same attention in the music world as Tomaso Albinoni or Corelli. His compositions contain mainly Italian, but also French style elements and a rich wealth of harmonies that were new at the time .
