Piet Pijn

Piet Pijn (born March 11, 1926 in The Hague , † January 5, 2002 in Bilthoven ) was a Dutch visual artist . He can be seen as the founder of northern realism .

Career

education

Piet Pijn was raised by his grandfather, the well-known painter and restorer Piet in 't Hout. Through him he came into contact with art painting at an early age. As a child prodigy, he won various prizes from the age of 14. At the age of 17 he became an active member of the Dutch Art Association ( Nederlands Kunstkring ), which was founded in 1917 and within the framework of which he regularly exhibited works. He studied from 1944 to 1948 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten) in The Hague and obtained the teaching diploma.

Art and teaching activity

After his studies he worked as a sculptor , mainly on behalf of various churches and monasteries; u. a. he created a Pietà for the Willibrorduskirche in Wassenaar .

From 1963 to 1984 Piet Pijn gave lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts Minerva in Groningen. In addition, from 1964 to 1973 he worked as a lecturer at the evening school of the Minerva Academy. He was also a lecturer at the Academy for Architecture in Groningen from 1969 to 1977. From 1970 to 1980 he was a member of the board of the “Contraprestatie” and “BKR” associations.

During this time he became the “founder of northern realism”, a well-known figurative art movement typical of “Minerva”. The "Minerva realism" was further spread after him by the Minerva lecturers M. Röling, D. Kraaipoel and Wouter Muller.

Even after he left the Minerva Academy, his name remained a household name for years. The general opinion was that anyone who really wanted to learn to paint should go to Piet Pijn. He was an enthusiastic lecturer with particular strengths in form study, composition and the mutual effect of colors.

From 1960 Piet Pijn was very active as a painter. He mainly painted with oil paint on hardboard. From 1984 he also used various techniques to paint on paper. He did not exhibit his works.

Sunlight plays a major role in Piet Pijn's works. The beauty of the woman (naked or clothed) is always clearly visible. His abstract use of color, combined with the play of light and shadow in a figurative idea, give his work a unique charisma.
