Pilophorus perplexus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The ant-like bugs are 4.0 to 5.0 millimeters long. The species looks very similar to Pilophorus cinnamopterus and, like this species, has a continuous posterior band on the hemielytras . In contrast to the similar species, however , Pilophorus perplexus has dull brown colored hemielytras and can also be found on other food plants.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe and western North Africa, as well as east to the Caspian region. It was introduced to North America and New Zealand through humans, presumably through the import of fruit trees.

In Germany and Austria the species is widespread and not rare. It colonizes deciduous trees.

Similar species

Outwardly, Pilophorus cinnamopterus is very similar to this type of bug. The forewings are more orange-brown in color. In addition, Pilophorus cinnamopterus is mainly found on Scots pine .

Way of life

Pilophorus perplexus is the most common species of its genus on deciduous trees and also has the largest range of host plants. Dwarf shrubs and, rarely, conifers are also colonized. They feed by sucking on the plants as well as predatory. The species is in orchards as a beneficial insect in combating leaf and scale insects , psyllids and spider mites . The females pierce their eggs deep into the young shoots of the host plants. Adults can be seen from mid-May to September.
