description

Pilosocereus aureispinus grows shrubby, branches only at the base and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The smooth, upright, dark green shoots are slightly woody and have a diameter of 5 to 9 centimeters. There are 20 to 24 ribs. The translucent, sometimes bristle-like thorns are golden to rust-colored. The 8 to 16 ascending central spines are 0.4 to 1.2 inches long. The 14 to 16 outspread radial spines are 4 to 12 millimeters long. A part of the shoots capable of flowering is hardly pronounced. The flowering areoles are scattered laterally on the shoots or form rings. White hair and gold-colored bristles up to 5 centimeters long arise from them.

The white, narrow tubular to funnel-shaped flowers are dark on the outside. They are up to 5 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2 to 2.2 centimeters. The spherical to depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 2.6 centimeters, tear open laterally and contain a white pulp.
