The Reformed Church in Sagogn in Gruob is an Evangelical - Reformed church under the monument of the canton of Grisons . The church forms a compositional unit with the surrounding cemetery and the adjacent rectory.

history

prehistory

At the beginning of the 18th century there was a Reformed minority of about a third of the population in Sagogn. The Catholic priest Caspar Jagmet from Disentis had been in office in Sagogn since 1695 and worked in the spirit of the Counter Reformation . He ensured that in 1701 at the parish assembly a resolution was passed that was impossible for the Reformed to accept, which went down in history as part of the sagas trade : there was now a ban on allowing Protestant clergy to come into the parish, as well as a ban, a to build his own church and a ban on calling the Ilanzer judicial community or the Drei Bünde on legal issues. A first all-Graubünden delegation, which was supposed to mediate between the positions, was unsuccessful, so that a civil war threatened to break out. Troops were already being drawn together on both sides. In September 1701, a peace agreement was finally reached: the Reformed in Sagogn were officially granted freedom of religion and the right to build their own house of worship. But it was not until nine years later, on the last Sunday in December of 1710, that a special charitable foundation was established.

construction

The construction preparations were made by Jakob Casutt, who donated the entire area to the church members free of charge, and Ludwig Castell. The building was built in 1743 by Jakob Krättli, which ended long disputes in the denominationally divided village into a Roman Catholic majority and a Reformed minority. In the 20th century, the church was renovated in 1933, 1957 and 1999.

Architecture and equipment

The church tower with onion dome in the Baroque style connects to the north facade and carries four bells in the bell house.

In the interior, designed as a hall church , the gallery with an artistic parapet, which is attached above the central, hexagonal baptismal font , stands out. The strikingly deep, polygonal pulpit stands on the left at the edge of the suggested choir . The choir faces exactly north. The gravestones in the cemetery, however, are all rusted .
