Pilosocereus catingicola is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet catingicola means 'inhabiting the caatinga'.

description

Pilosocereus catingicola grows tree-like or shrubby, branches above the base and reaches heights of 3 to 10 meters. The smooth shoots are olive green to glauk and have a diameter of 3.5 to 12 centimeters. There are 4 to 12 ribs, sometimes with transverse furrows. The non-translucent thorns are yellowish brown. The ascending to protruding 1 to 11 central spines are 0.2 to 4 centimeters long. The 8 to 12 radial spines are 3 to 13 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is only weakly developed. It is limited to 1 to 3 ribs. White to gray hairs up to 3 centimeters in length arise from the areoles on them.

The wide-opening, white flowers are light green on the outside. They are 5.5 to 6.7 inches long and 4.7 to 7 inches in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter of 4.2 to 6 centimeters, tear open laterally and contain a magenta-colored pulp.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Pilosocereus catingicola is widespread in the Caatinga vegetation in northeastern Brazil .

The first description as Cereus catingicola was published in 1908 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke (1854-1911). Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Pseudopilocereus catingicola (Gürke) Buxb.

There will be the two subspecies :

  • Pilosocereus catingicola subsp. catingicola
  • Pilosocereus catingicola subsp. salvadorensis

distinguished.

Pilosocereus catingicola subsp. salvadorensis was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. low risk led. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered and the subspecies Pilosocereus catingicola subsp. salvadorensis excluded from the list.
