Pilosocereus densiareolatus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet densiareolatus means 'densely occupied with areoles'.

description

Pilosocereus densiareolatus grows tree-shaped with a clearly defined trunk and reaches heights of 2 to 6.5 meters. The upright, smooth shoots are olive green to bluish, have a diameter of 3 to 9 centimeters and are slightly woody. There are 13 to 19 ribs. The translucent, brown to gold-colored thorns turn gray with age. The ascending 6 to 15 central spines are 0.9 to 3.5 inches long. The 14 to 16 spread radial spines are 4 to 7 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is little to very distinct, as a lateral cephalium . The areoles there are covered with white to gray or brown hair 3 to 8 centimeters long and gold-colored bristles.

The short tubular, white flowers are olive green on the outside. They are 5 to 5 centimeters long and can reach a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits are 2 to 3 centimeters long, tear laterally or near their base and contain a white pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus densiareolatus is distributed in Brazil in the north of the state of Minas Gerais and in the west of the state of Bahia . The first description was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter .

In 1999 a subspecies from Bahia was described:

Pilosocereus densiareolatus ssp. brunneolanatus PJBraun & Esteves.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
