Pilosocereus multicostatus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet multicostatus means 'multi-ribbed'.

description

Pilosocereus multicostatus grows shrubby, usually without a clearly defined trunk, branches near the ground and reaches heights of 1.5 to 3.5 meters. The upright, smooth, bright green shoots are weakly woody and have a diameter of 3.8 to 7.5 centimeters. There are 18 to 25 ribs. The translucent thorns are golden yellow to brown. The 3 to 7 ascending central spines are 1 to 2 inches long. The 15 to 18 spread radial spines are 5 to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is not or only weakly developed. The flowering areoles are scattered along the shoots, but are more common at their tips. They are covered with sparse gray or white long hair and flexible golden bristles up to 4 centimeters in length.

The gradually widening flowers are up to 4.7 centimeters long and reach 2.9 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits have a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters, tear at their base or tip and contain a magenta-colored pulp.

Systematics, distribution and threat

Pilosocereus multicostatus is distributed in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais at altitudes of 670 to 900 meters. The first description was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter .

Pilosocereus multicostatus was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. low risk, classified. In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered.
