Pilosocereus purpusii is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). A common name is "Viejo".

description

Pilosocereus purpusii grows shrubby, branched or sometimes unbranched and reaches heights of 2 to 3 meters. The upright, olive-green shoots are sometimes bluish at their tips and are 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. There are 7 to 12 low ribs with visible transverse furrows. The opaque thorns are initially yellowish and gray or become almost black. The mostly single central spine, sometimes up to four, is 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long. The 8 to 10 expanded radial spines are up to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is clearly pronounced. The flowering areoles are located directly on the shoot tip and just below it. They are covered with numerous silky hairs.

The white flowers are light pink on the outside. They are up to 7 inches long. The fruits are spherical and reach a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus purpusii is common in western Mexico .

The first description as Cephalocereus purpusii was published in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Pilocereus purpusii (Britton & Rose) FMKunth .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
