Pilot Island (literally "pilot island") is a 1.5 hectare island in Lake Michigan . It belongs to Door County in the northeast of the US state Wisconsin and was originally developed as a location for a lighthouse. The lighthouse, built in 1858, is still in operation today.
Pilot Island is part of the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge and is used to protect the habitat of native birds and threatened species. There are breeding colonies of shags and American herring gulls on the island . Some great blue herons and night herons also breed on Pilot Island. Because of the occurrence of ground-nesting migratory birds and because the island is restricted and difficult to access, general public use is prohibited.
