Mushroom advice center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A mushroom advice center is a public place where private mushroom collectors can examine their supposed edible mushrooms from mushroom experts, identify them and have them examined for toxicity .

The facilities are mostly open in the mushroom season between August and November, mostly in September, October for a few hours, often only on weekends, on Sundays or even on Mondays at certain times. Some of them are under the direction of municipal institutions such as the health department or the food inspection office (such as in Leipzig), and the mushroom advisors mainly work on a voluntary basis . The financing of the facilities is always problematic, some have already had to close due to lack of money.

The DGM Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mykologie eV offers advanced training for mushroom experts (previously called mushroom advisors) that certifies them. She also provides a list of the mushroom experts she has trained. Other associations such as the Bavarian Mycological Society , the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation, the Berlin State Association or the Thuringian Mycology Working Group also train mushroom advisors. However, training as a mushroom expert is not a prerequisite for working as a mushroom consultant. For Austria, the Austrian Mycological Society publishes a list of the “mushroom information centers” named here. The advisors working in Austria have come together to form the Austrian Mushroom Advisors Working Group.

Mushroom advice centers are voluntary, non-governmental institutions and do not require any official approval, mushroom advisors do not require any state or statutory recognition. The names are not protected. Private providers can also operate such facilities. If, as an exception, offices or public institutions also operate mushroom advice centers, these are voluntary services and offers. Anyone looking for information in a mushroom advice center should therefore find out about the qualifications of the advisors beforehand.

If there is a suspicion of acute poisoning with mushrooms, as with all poisonings, a poison emergency number is available around the clock in all German-speaking countries .

Mushroom advice in the GDR

In contrast to the old Federal Republic and reunified Germany, there was an officially operated mushroom advisory service in the GDR. This was in the tradition of the Third Reich , where the so-called “food from the forest” was propagated in the course of the self-sufficiency efforts. The carrier in the Nazi state was the (semi-state) Reichsnährstand . In the GDR in the 14 districts and in East Berlin , so-called “district mushroom experts” (half a “full-time unit” with the rank of a health supervisor / hygiene inspector) took over the organization within the framework of the district hygiene inspections. They trained so-called “mushroom experts” for all circles, who took on specific advice on site. These in turn were able to appoint so-called “local mushroom experts” to their own advice centers. The concrete advice was given on a voluntary basis, with a moderate allowance for expenses by the authorities.
