Pinchas ben Jair

Pinchas ben Jair ( Phinehas b. Jair ) was an ancient Jewish scholar who was famous for his extraordinary piety and who reported many miracles (legend of the pious donkey etc.). He worked in the second half of the second century AD and belonged to the so-called fourth generation of the Tannaites .

Life

He was the son-in-law of Shimon ben Jochai and probably lived in Lydda .

Its halachot has not survived; it is only mentioned once in the Mishnah . It is reported that he meticulously adhered to the purity laws and so z. B. never spoke a bracha about someone else's bread and when he entered adulthood did not even eat his father's meal (bab. Chullin 7b). The observance of the Schmitta year was also of great importance to him .

He is considered the author of the Midrash Taje (= Baraita des Pinchas ben Jair ).
