The Piner Bay is a 13 km deep, 3 km wide and non-iced bay on the coast of the East Antarctic Adelieland . It is located between Cape Bienvenue and the east side of the glacier tongue of the Astrolabe glacier .
The bay was discovered on January 30, 1840 in the course of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of polar explorer Charles Wilkes . He named it after Thomas Piner, quartermaster on the flagship of the research trip , the sloop USS Vincennes .
