action

The extremely short-sighted Mister Magoo is asked by his neighbors to take care of their little son Homer in the evening. Magoo enthusiastically accepts the offer, since he has always wanted to be a father. The phone call breaks off when Magoo puts his cigar in the telephone's intercom and tries in vain to get his cuckoo clock to work as a supposed pay phone with money. Magoo goes to the neighboring house and passes the notorious burglar "Cat Feed" Finnegan, who has just overheard the family's going out plans and wants to break into the house.

Magoo begins babysitting but fails to give Homer the vial. He is irritated by the family dog, who keeps making noises: the dog chases away the intruder Finnegan when he tries to get into the house through the open window. Finnegan now climbs onto the roof and the dog hits the ground as soon as he hears him slip on the roof. Magoo follows the source of the noise and soon confuses the dog with Homer crawling on the floor. Now the dog is being fed and washed in the bathtub, while Homer is thrown out of the bathroom as a supposed dog. Homer finds a tube of shaving cream and plays with it. Soon he has a big shaving cream beard. Meanwhile, Finnegan gets into the house and tries to rob it. Magoo puts the dog to bed in the nursery and shortly afterwards sees Homer with the shaving foam beard sitting at the foot of the stairs. He believes it is a burglar, saves the dog from the cot and alerts the police. Finnegan overhears the call and now flees in panic while the dog and Magoo hunt him down. In the end, the police appear and arrest Finnegan. The frightened parents are relieved when Magoo hands them the wrapped up Homer and says that he had everything under control. Homer turns out to be the dog, while the boy is dismantling the interior of the apartment with a small ax.

The cuckoo clock shows midnight. The cuckoo appears and shortly afterwards a flood of coins unloads from the clock, which the extremely short-sighted Magoo has always viewed as a payphone.
