action
Vienna in the late 19th century: The mouse Johann and the house cat also live in Johann Strauss' apartment . While Strauss is playing his waltzes on the piano, the mouse regularly dances to it outside its mouse hole. The cat tries to catch the mouse every time, but always fails. When the maestro leaves the apartment and goes on a journey, the cat sees its chance of catching the mouse Johann dwindle. She is now learning to play the piano herself, playing Strauss' waltz and at the same time trying to catch the dancing Johann.
When the cat gets hold of the mouse one day, both animals are promptly disturbed by the listening staff, who applaud the cat's piano music. The news of the piano playing cat reaches the emperor, who asks the playing cat and the dancing mouse to a concert in the court. The lecture is a success, even if the hunt of the two opponents starts again immediately after the cat has finished its game. But there are also mouse holes in the palace, so that the cat is left behind again.
