Life
Mercanti was one of the leading filmmakers and pioneers of Sicilian film, along with the Gorgone brothers, with whom he often worked ; he made his first films in the 1930s for the "Organizzazzione Filmistica Siciliana" in his hometown. Initially working as an assistant director, from 1943 he continuously made films on his own responsibility, turning to commercial films and presenting adventure material as well as melodramas, later westerns and agent films. He often used the anglicized version of his name, "Joseph Trader", as a pseudonym . Occasionally he also wrote the scripts for his films; 1949 unique for another director when he scripted Aldo Vergano's I fuorilegge .
