The Pioneer Tarn is a small lake on the island of Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It is located about 450 m east of Cape Arkona in the southwest of the island and was created as a result of the retreat of the Lied and Gotley glaciers .
The lake is named after the American barque pioneer from New London , Connecticut , who operated seal hunting in the waters around Heard on two consecutive voyages from 1855 to 1857 and from 1857 to 1859 .
