Piotr Gontarczyk

Piotr Gontarczyk (born April 29, 1970 in Żyrardów ) is a Polish historian and political scientist .

life and work

Gontarczyk is a graduate of Warsaw University with a PhD in history and political science . From 1998 to 2005 he worked in the Biuro Rzecznika Interesu Publicznego (Office of the Commissioner of Public Interest). Since 2006 he has been the deputy director of the archives office at Instytut Pamięci Narodowej (IPN), the Polish equivalent of the Gauck authority . There he became Deputy Director of the Lustration Department - Biuro Lustracyjne in 2007 .

In 2008 he and his colleague Sławomir Cenckiewicz published the book SB a Lech Wałęsa (The SB and Lech Wałęsa), which led to controversy in Poland. In the book, the authors claim that a worker at the Gdańsk Lenin Shipyard and informal employee of the Polish State Security Service listed under the name "Bolek" is identical to Lech Wałęsa , the workers' leader and later President of Poland .
