The Piriápolis was a Belgian cargo ship that entered service in 1938 and was destroyed and sunk on June 11, 1940 near Le Havre in an attack by the German Air Force during World War II.

The ship was built by the John Cockerill company and owned by the Compagnie Maritime Belge .

The steel-built ship was 140.1 by 18.7 by 8.2 meters and had a volume of 7,340 gross tons . Thanks to the diesel engine with 5,500 horsepower, it reached a speed of up to 14 knots.

Between 1938 and 1940 the Piriápolis drove eight times to Buenos Aires , taking passengers with it. Upon arrival on August 21, 1939, participants of the 1939 Chess Olympiad and the 1939 Women's World Chess Championship were on board.
