Piroschka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piroschka or Piroska is a Hungarian female given name .

Origin and meaning

Piroska comes from the Latin first name Prisca , which in Hungary became Piriska, and later Piroska. Prisca originally means: the venerable, the beautiful, the magnificent. The old Hungarian word piros likely influenced the change as well.

Since the Hungarian piros for the color red is combined with the Hungarian diminutive suffix -ka , the name means something like 'little red'. In Hungarian, the “s” is pronounced like a German “sch” ( IPA : ʃ ), which is why the name is usually written 'Piroschka' in German-speaking countries.

As a woman's name, Piroska is about as characteristic of Hungary as Heidi is of Switzerland. Therefore, both in Hungary and in other countries, there are many hotels, restaurants and specialty shops that bear the name Piroska to draw attention to their Hungarian identity. The name is also the Hungarian name for Little Red Riding Hood .

distribution

The name became known with the film I often think of Piroschka (1955) based on the novel by Hugo Hartung with Liselotte Pulver as Piroschka.
