description
A pistol shield is usually made of steel . It is round and convex on the outside . The shield is assembled from several triangular parts or driven from one piece. In the middle there is often a bulge ( shield boss ) in which the barrel of a muzzle loading pistol is attached. In some versions, the barrel is not centered, but shifted upwards from the center. A grid- like structure is often worked out of the shield over the barrel , through which a possible enemy can be observed when the shield is raised and is used for aiming. This type of shield was widespread in Europe in the 16th century. Henry VIII's bodyguard of England wore these shields. Several copies can be seen in the Tower of London and in the Royal Armories in Leeds (see web link).
