Pjetër Arbnori (actually Filip Toma ; born January 18, 1935 in Shkodra , † July 8, 2006 in Naples ) was an Albanian writer and politician. Arbnori spent more than 28 years as an opponent of the regime in the prisons of socialist Albania. In 1989/90 he was one of the leaders of the democracy movement that brought about the end of socialist rule .

Life

In 1953 Pjetër Arbnori began working as a teacher, but in 1954 he was dismissed for political reasons. After that he worked as a farm worker for a few years. He was later allowed to take up a distance learning course at the Philological Faculty of the University of Tirana , which he graduated as a literary scholar in 1960.

In the same year, Pjetër Arbnori was targeted by the Sigurimi secret police . He was sentenced to death in 1961 for attempting to form a social democratic group. In the same year he was a co-founder of the Democratic Party of Albania . From 1991 to 2001 he was a member of the Albanian Parliament ; 1992–1997 he was President of Parliament and thus one of the few politically persecuted Albania who received a high office after reunification.
