history

Detail of the “Plan scénographique de Lyon” from 1548

The square marks the spot where in 1206 the merchants' guilds erected a wall against Archbishop Renaud II de Forez and his taxation ambitions. After armed intervention by the bishop in 1208 and an arbitration ruling by Pope Innocent III. The minds calmed down and Renaud de Forez and his successors even continued to build on this city wall.

The conquest of Lyon in 1793

In the 16th century the medieval city wall fell into disrepair and in 1538 its demolition began. From 1646 to 1651, Simon Maupin built Lyon's town hall (Hôtel de ville de Lyon). Jules Hardouin-Mansart rebuilt it after the fire of 1674. The monastery, which was to become an art museum in 1803, was also rebuilt at that time.

During the terrorist phase of the French Revolution , the guillotine stood on this square . The ornamental fountain by Bartholdi with its river allegory was actually intended for Bordeaux , but was viewed by the city fathers there as too expensive. In 1890 it was acquired for his hometown by the mayor of Lyon, Antoine Gailleton .

During the redesign in 1994 by Christian Drevet and Daniel Buren , the fountain system had to be relocated and an underground car park was installed under the square . Since September 29, 1995 it has been classified as a Monument historique .
