Placentia is a municipality ( town ) on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The place is located in the west of the Avalon Peninsula on Placentia Bay .
Placentia had 3,496 inhabitants at the 2016 census. Five years earlier there were 3,643 inhabitants. Thus the population is decreasing slightly.
In addition to Placentia, the community also includes Argentia Industrial Park, Townside, Freshwater, Dunville and Jerseyside. There is a small port that is mainly used for fishing . One of the two ferry ports on Newfoundland is located in Argentia, which are approached from North Sydney in Nova Scotia .
The place was from 1870 to 1891 the seat of the Apostolic Prefecture Placentia .
