Placidus Ackermann

Placidus Ackermann (baptized January 8, 1765 in Ramiswil as Leontius Ackermann ; † August 9, 1842 in the Mariastein Monastery ) was a Swiss Benedictine and abbot of the Mariastein Monastery.

Life

Leontius Ackermann was born in the Guldental near Ramiswil . By joining the monastery community of Mariastein he joined the order of the Benedictines after studying in Mariastein and Freiburg im Üechtland . During his profession on November 1, 1784, he took the religious name Placidus. He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1789. Subsequently, he was the main waiter of the monastery until 1797 , after which he was head of the monastery school for a short time. In March 1798 ( French invasion ) the French occupied the Mariastein monastery and the remaining monks, including Placidus Ackermann, had to leave the monastery. Ackermann subsequently worked as a pastor in Beinwil . In the Beinwil Monastery , the original monastery of the Beinwil-Mariastein monastery community , a small monastery lived again during the Helvetic period, its superior Placidus Ackermann until May 1802, when the Mariastein abbot Hieronymus Brunner himself came to Beinwil. In June 1804, after the death of Abbot Hieronymus on April 20, Placidus Ackermann was elected abbot in Beinwil. As a result, the Mariastein Monastery was restored and restored under Abbot Placidus. During the term of office of Abbot Placidus, the construction of today's classical facade of the monastery church (1830–1834) also fell. In 1841 Bonifaz Pfluger was elected as his successor and on August 9, 1842 Placidus Ackermann died in Mariastein.
