Bad Salzungen Planetarium

Opening on October 7, 1984 Planetarium Bad Salzungen was as schools and public observatory of the spa town of Bad Salzungen designed and located on the property on Burgsee 6 in Rathenaupark on the southern edge of the castle lake . The Wartburgkreis Adult Education Center has been the operator of the planetarium since 1996 .

The one-story building was designed as a low-rise building with a dome, the facade shows an artist's representation of the solar system . From 1999 to 2002 the building and the outdoor facilities were completely renovated. After the reopening on May 10, 2000, the number of visitors was counted, and at the beginning of September 2006 it was 15,000. Welcomes visitors to the planetarium.

The projection surface of the dome has a diameter of 8 meters. The building offers space for up to 35 people to show the starry sky . A Zeiss ZKP 1 is used as the projector , it was built in 1951 by VEB Carl Zeiss in Jena . The planetarium is open every Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Special screenings take place as part of adult education events for groups and schools. Astronomical events occurring in the course of the year, such as a solar or lunar eclipse, are also discussed.

A special feature of the facility is the "Star Dinner" offered in the summer months - it is a culinary offer from the neighboring restaurant and offers guests a mental journey through our evening starry sky, accompanied by interesting information from the history of astronomy and literary quotations.
