The Burgsee is a circular sinkhole lake up to 25 m deep in the center of the spa and district town of Bad Salzungen in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

Burgsee with Kurhaus (1900)

The Burgsee is located south of the old town of Bad Salzungen. A circular path, which has been developed as a promenade on the north-western bank, leads around the lake. Important buildings in the immediate vicinity of the lake are the Kurhaus, the remains of the wall of the medieval Schnepfenburg on the north-west bank , the Haunsche Hof and the planetarium . The half-timbered house of the former station of young naturalists and technicians , located on the south-east bank directly next to the planetarium, was destroyed by fire in August 2013. The east bank is lined with residential buildings, most of which were built in the 1990s. The Protestant town church and the Catholic St. Andrew's Church are each about 100 meters from the lake . The Rathenaupark is located south of the lake .

description

The Burgsee has a circumference of 1.15 km and is sunk up to 25 m deep into the middle red sandstone . The lake has no visible inflow and outflow, it is fed by springs on the bottom and by rainwater. A special feature is the high phosphate content of the water.

After the lake's water level was continuously falling in 2013, the local wastewater association, in consultation with the city administration and the responsible water authority, installed continuous online measurement of the water level. The drop in the water level was reduced in March 2014 by renovating a sewer that ran past.
