Planetary Annihilation is a real-time strategy game produced and distributed by Uber Entertainment . Many of the developers were also involved in the development of Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander , with which the game has certain similarities. The development was financed through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter .

description

Planetary Annihilation is a real-time strategy game in which each player controls a robot army and tries to destroy the armies of the other players. At the beginning of the game, each player only has one main unit, the Commander , who has to build a base. The base consists of buildings that extract the raw materials metal and energy , factories in which combat and construction units are built, and defenses. After this base is established, players can attack each other and try to control a larger part of the map. In normal game mode, the winner is the player whose commander is the last to be alive.

A special feature of Planetary Annihilation is that the playing field is spherical. Each player can therefore be attacked from any side. The size of these playing field planets can be adjusted to the number of players. Players can also switch between different planets. Up to 40 players should be able to take part in such interplanetary games.

Financing, development and sales

To finance the game, an application was submitted on August 14, 2012 to the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter . In the first 24 hours there were already 4,000 people who supported the project with 140,000 US dollars . After just 15 days, the number of supporters increased to 20,000 and the amount raised to US $ 900,000. At the end of the one-month period, US $ 2,229,344 had been raised from 44,162 backers. This made Planetary Annihilation the 11th Kickstarter project to raise more than US $ 1 million.

Another special feature of Planetary Annihilation is that those who pre-ordered the game had access to the beta or alpha version from a certain amount. The alpha version was released on June 7, 2013, the beta version on September 26, the gamma version with extensive innovations in March 2014. The finished game was released on September 5, 2014.

When the game was released on September 5, 2014, the game was characterized by a large number of program errors . For example, incorrect RAM addressing causes program crashes, and a game server error causes too many games to be hosted on one server, which can lead to performance drops or even unplayability. However, many of these bugs have now been fixed by current versions / builds of the game. Shortly after publication, the trade press described Planetary Annihilation mostly as "unfinished". Stefan Köhler from GameStar stated that the single player was "unkind and not to be recommended, tutorial and game introduction [...] a bad joke and beginners" would be left "hopelessly alone".
