Plaster Rock is a small town ( Village ) in Victoria County in the Canadian province of New Brunswick with 1135 inhabitants (2011), who mainly speak English .

geography

The connecting roads New Brunswick Route 108 , New Brunswick Route 109 and New Brunswick Route 385 meet in Plaster Rock . The Tobique River flows through the village . Grand Falls and Perth-Andover are approximately 30 kilometers to the northwest and southwest, respectively.

history

Pond hockey

The first settler (Hezekiah Day) settled in the place together with two brothers in 1881. Since a lying near mountain also gypsum contained, which for the production of plaster (English: plaster ) is used, the place was Plaster Rock called. The residents initially operated agriculture for self-sufficiency. Later, due to the abundance of forests in the area, sawmills were also put into operation and the timber industry operated. The first wooden bridge over the Tobique River was built in 1901, which was later replaced by a concrete bridge after it was destroyed by floods .

Since 2002, the World Pond Hockey Championship has been held every year in Plaster Rock , an ice hockey tournament that is played exclusively on natural ice surfaces ( World Pond Hockey Championships ). The sport is based on simple rules of the game and has enjoyed growing popularity since its introduction.
