Platte ( French Île Platte , English Platte Island ) is a coral island in the Indian Ocean belonging to the Republic of the Seychelles . It is located about 135 kilometers south of the main island of Mahé and is one of the so-called Outer Islands of the Seychelles. Together with the island of Coëtivy , located 171 kilometers south-east, it is part of the group of the " Southern Coral Islands ". The island was discovered in 1769 by Lieutenant de Lampériaire of La Curieuse and named Platte because of its flatness.

geography

The island is 1250 meters long in north-south direction, a maximum of 550 meters wide in east-west direction and has a land area of 0.54 km² (54 hectares ). The flat and forested island is divided by a 900 meter long runway. The airport, which has the ICAO code FSPL, is only occasionally served by the Island Development Company (IDC) from Mahé. There is a small settlement on the west coast. The island has only three residents.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs , the openings of which in the northwest allow a landing with boats.

The island of Platte belongs to a largely submerged atoll , which covers an area of about 270 km² with an extension of 25 by 14 kilometers.
