Scientific name
Platycephaloidei

The Platycephaloidei are a suborder of the bony fish order of the perch-like (Perciformes). The Platycephaloidei belong to five families, but sometimes different depending on the author. All species of the taxon are bottom-dwelling marine fish.

features

Their bodies are elongated, and their heads are usually large, flattened and provided with bone crests and thorns. Two dorsal fins are clearly separated from each other. The distance between the pelvic fins is usually relatively large. They are supported by a spiked ray and five soft rays (only three for the flat-headed spines). The anal fin has zero, one or three spine rays and 5 to 18 soft rays. The bottom-dwelling fish can have a swim bladder , but it can also be absent. The number of vertebrae is 26 or 27.

Familys

According to Betancur-R and colleagues, the following families belong to the platycephaloidei:

Nelson, Grande and Wilson also count the gurnards (Triglidae) and the armored gurnards (Peristediidae) to the Platycephaloidei. In Betancur-R and colleagues, the two families form an independent subordination of the perch-like, the triglioidei.

Systematics

The suborder Platycephaloidei summarizes strongly benthic , elongated fish families and differentiates them from the less strongly benthic, rather stocky and high-backed, closely related Scorpaenoidei .
