Platydoras brachylecis is a freshwater fish from the family of catfishes (Doradidae). Like all spiny catfish, Platydoras costatus is native to South America. Its distribution area is in northeastern Brazil .

Platydoras brachylecis becomes up to 21 cm long, the body height is 19.3 to 26.6% of the standard length . As with all Platydoras species, the head is large, broad and slightly flattened. The head length is 26.4 to 29% of the standard length. The front trunk is approximately round in cross-section, from the level of the dorsal fin attachment to the caudal fin, it flattens increasingly laterally. The ventral side is flat. The 56 to 60 protruding scales of the middle row of scales on the sides of the body are relatively short compared to those of other Platydoras species, which is referred to by the species epithet brachylecis ( size : "brachy" = short, "lekis" = plate).

The basic color of Platydoras brachylecis is dark gray or dark gray-brown, the ventral side is whitish to yellow. On the sides of the body there is a clear, light stripe that extends to the central rays of the caudal fin. The barbels are dark gray-brown, the pair on the lower jaw lighter than the two pairs on the upper jaw.

Platydoras brachylecis occurs in northeastern Brazil . Its distribution area includes the river systems of the Rio Mearim , the Rio Pindaré , the Rio Itapecuru and the Rio Parnaíba in the states of Maranhão , Ceará and Piauí .
