Platydoras (from the Greek platys "broad", and Doras , a species of thorn catfish ) is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of thorn catfish (Doradidae). The genus is widespread in northern and central South America. The distribution area extends from the Orinoco , Guiana and the Amazon basin , the northeast of Brazil and the Rio Xingu to the Río Paraguay .

features

Platydoras species become 15 to 24 cm long. Their bodies are plump and resembling tadpoles. The head large, broad and roughly flattened. The mouth is wide and surrounded by three pairs of barbels. The eyes in the front half of the head or in the middle of the head are relatively large. The dorsal fin is high and triangular. Its sting ray is serrated on its front edge and behind. The adipose fin is longer than the anal fin due to a keel-like extension to the dorsal fin. The tail stalk is armored above and below by bone shields. The plates on the sides of the body are high and only leave the back region free. The large pectoral fins have a powerful spiked ray and a locking joint with which the spread pectoral fins can be fixed. The caudal fin is forked.

species

So far, four types have been described:

There is also a fifth, previously undescribed species from the river basin of the Rio Xingu .
