Family : Thorn catfish (Doradidae)
Genre : Platydoras
Type : Platydoras costatus
Scientific name
Platydoras costatus
( Linnaeus , 1758)

The Platydoras costatus belongs to the family of thorn catfish ( Doradidae) from the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes). Like all spiny catfish, Platydoras costatus is native to South America, its distribution area is in the north of the continent.

features

Platydoras costatus becomes up to 24 cm long. In the dorsal fin , a long hard ray is followed by six soft rays. The anal fin has 10-11 soft rays.

For a long time Platydoras costatus was confused with the line thorn catfish ( Platydoras armatulus ). Platydoras armatulus has conspicuous yellow stripes on the sides and on the head. It was mainly because of this color that it became a popular aquarium fish, which has also been available from specialist aquarium stores in Germany since the 1960s. It was not until 2008, during an investigation by Piorski, Garavello, Arce and Sabaj Pérez, that the Platydoras costatus described by Carl von Linné differs from Platydoras armatulus in several characteristics, but especially in the lack of light stripes . Platydoras costatus was never or only very rarely in the aquarium trade.

distribution

Platydoras costatus is native to the northern edge of the Amazon basin . Its distribution area includes the river systems of the Corantijn on the border of Guyana and Suriname , the Suriname and Maroni rivers between the states of Suriname and French Guiana .

Taxonomy

Platydoras costatus was originally described by Carl von Linné as Silurus costatus . He referred to the work of Gronow , who had published images of the fish as early as 1754. Pieter Bleeker established a separate genus for Silurus costatus in 1862 and named it Platydoras . Platydoras costatus is therefore the type species of the genus Platydoras . In 1863 Bleeker expanded the genus to include a fish described as Doras armatulus by Achille Valenciennes in 1840, which was later often confused with Platydoras costatus . In 1864 Bleeker synonymized Platydoras dentatus with Platydoras costatus . Platydoras helicophilus is also a synonym for Platydoras costatus .
