The Platz der Deutschen Einheit is located in downtown Osnabrück directly in front of the Osnabrück Theater . Often the square is popularly called the theater forecourt. In the course of the inauguration on October 3, 2010, the Platz der Deutschen Einheit was officially spun off from Domhof street .

location

The street Domhof runs on the south side of the square, the square of the same name Domhof with cathedral and cathedral forum is separated by the street Kleine Doms Freiheit on the north side. From the west comes Lortzingstrasse, which merges into Domhof street with the well-known checkerboard pattern.

history

Even before the place was officially named, the Herrenteichslaischaft created the sculpture Equal Weight - Balance by Joachim Bandau in 1998 . In 2010, the previously unnamed square as part of the Domhof street was given the name Platz der Deutschen Einheit . On October 3, 2010, the then Mayor of Osnabrück, Boris Pistorius, unveiled the street sign to commemorate the 20th anniversary of reunification. Guests of honor such as civil rights activist Friedrich Schorlemmer , representatives from culture, politics and the armed forces were present at the celebration . The CDU City Council parliamentary group with its parliamentary group leader Fritz Brickwedde initiated the renaming .

In the online map service of the provider Google , neither the new name Platz der Deutschen Einheit nor the popular name Theatervorplatz have been entered for more than six years . The result was that interested visitors had difficulties in finding the location, as only the street Domhof, i.e. the state before the demerger of the square, was indicated. The Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung reported on this in February 2017. This was later corrected, but initially in the form that the entire Domhof street was now listed as a place of German unity and it could no longer be found on Google maps.

The bus stop, which was previously only called Theater , was renamed Theater / Platz der Deutschen Einheit with the timetable change in 2017 .

Plastic Equal Weight - Equilibrium

Part of the sculpture Equal Weight - Equilibrium by Joachim Bandau

After the installation of the sculpture Equal Weight - Balance , the area of the work of art, which was partially sunk in the square, became a trap for motor vehicles more often. This part has a round steel plate that protrudes like a ramp from the ground and is bent in the middle. Despite the space not cleared for car traffic, it is used more often for turning and turning, which was fatal for some vehicle drivers. In 2003 a VW bus got lost on this plastic and got stuck there. Also in 2007 a construction truck got stuck on the work of art. On January 10, 2018, an 86-year-old man with his SUV got caught on the artwork and had to be recovered with a crane.

Wrong zebra crossing

Incorrect zebra crossing as a checkerboard pattern on the street Lortzingstraße / Domhof

In 2001, a checkerboard pattern was laid out on the Platz der Deutschen Einheit at the intersection of the streets Domhof, Kleine Doms Freiheit and Lortzingstraße in order to defuse the focus of the accident. Since then, there have been virtually no more accidents involving pedestrians. It was carried out because a council member from Osnabrück discovered a facility of this type in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe and suggested the practical test.

Events

Due to its central location at the beginning of the pedestrian zone, the Platz der Deutschen Einheit is often a place for protests and various events.
