Playlist pitching

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Playlist pitching (English for throwing the playlist ) is a marketing process, in which songs to the creators of playlists to be sent in order to be added to them in the. Most of the time you focus on the largest possible playlists in order to reach a large number of listeners. The largest playlists are usually created and managed by the music streaming platforms themselves. However, there are also playlists that have been created by listeners and users of the respective portals.

Playlist pitching is a common way of reaching more listeners. There have been cases in which artists were able to place themselves in several hundred playlists and gain so many new listeners.

Reception and application

According to a report by Rolling Stone on February 27, 2020, over 70,000 musicians on Spotify were already using the native tool to apply for a playlist. The newspaper also sees this as an opportunity for smaller musicians to advance in the large music market. Fortune , on the other hand, criticizes the business with the marketing method and how it influences the music landscape and falsifies numbers. With the statement “streaming killed the radio star”, the newspaper refers to the hit song Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles and therefore sees playlist pitching on streaming services as a similar business model to paid-for playing songs on the radio. Wired wrote an article back in 2017 about the importance of playlist pitching on Spotify for the music industry, exposing the practice to the public. The Guardian newspaper also looked at the increasing importance of playlists and playlist pitching in the music sector in 2017 and noted that playlists are increasingly replacing or increasing in importance for the music album format on streaming platforms.
