The plectopyloidea are a superfamily of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The representatives of the superfamily are native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The oldest fossil representatives come from the Eocene of southern China ( Hebei ).
features
The casings are right or left-handed and relatively small. They are strongly flattened to almost flat. The mouth is quite complex with teeth, bent and wavy mouth edges. The jaw is relatively thin and striped vertically. It can also have a median projection. In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the penis has a honeycomb-like structure on the inner wall, which consists of nodes. An epiphallus can be present or absent. The flagellum, on the other hand, is always rudimentary or absent entirely. The spermatic duct (vas deferens) does not lie against the penis. The stem of the spermathec is relatively long and is not or only slightly broadened at the base.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The plectopyloidea are common in Tibet, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka, in Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, China and southern Japan (Ryukyu Islands)) and in southwestern Africa.
Systematics
The superfamily Plectopyloidea is divided by Schileyko (1999) into two families (Corillidae and Plectopylidae), Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) assign three families.
- Superfamily Plectopyloidea Moellendorff, 1898
- Family Plectopylidae Moellendorff, 1898
- Family Corillidae Pilsbry, 1905
- Sculptariidae Degner family , 1923
The family Sculptariidae is placed by Schileyko (1999) to the superfamily Acavoidea .
