Plover Scar Lighthouse (also Abbey Lighthouse ) is a lighthouse that indicates and secures the confluence of the River Lune in Morecambe Bay . Plover Scar is a small rocky reef in the estuary where the lighthouse is located and the name Abbey Lighthouse is based on the now defunct Cockersand Abbey on the mainland near the lighthouse.
The lighthouse was built in 1847. It has a height of 27 feet (approx. 8.22 m) with the beacon itself at a height of 20 feet (approx. 6.09 m). Its white beacon, flashing every 2 seconds, can be seen approximately 11 km (7 miles ) away. The lighthouse has been operated automatically since 1951, the lighthouse keeper's house was on the mainland ( 53 ° 58 ′ 57.4 ″ N , 2 ° 52 ′ 10.8 ″ W ).
