The Podhorní vrch (Podhorn) volcanic dome is located a few kilometers east of Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) in Bohemia . The volcanic rock consists of an olivine nephelinite and was formed about 17 million years ago.
Goethe and the Podhorn
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe cured several times in Marienbad and used the opportunity to go on geological excursions in the area. During a trip to Teplá Abbey on August 21, 1821, he unexpectedly discovered the volcanic rock. Although Goethe did not comment explicitly on the formation of the Podhorn, he described the surrounding area in a Neptunistic way. A handpiece is still in Goethe's Weimar collection today (No. 7318).
