Poedit is a free , graphic tool for the computer-aided translation of documentation and program interfaces. It is a graphical front end to the tools of the GNU gettext system, whose translation files with the extension * .po gave their name.
It offers translation memory and project management functionality and is otherwise kept quite simple. Un (completely) translated text snippets are highlighted, translation catalogs can be imported and known translations from the catalog are automatically adopted.
The source texts of the open source version are available under the MIT license on GitHub . The software runs under Unix-like ( Linux , macOS , ...) and Windows systems. With many popular Linux distributions , it can be installed directly from the standard package sources.
The wxWidgets class library is used for the surface . The Berkeley DB is used for the translation memory functionality .
Version 1.1.1 introduced the translation memory functionality. From version 1.3.5, native support for Mac OS X systems is included.
Poedit Pro
From version 1.6.1 there is also a paid pro version that can be used to translate WordPress themes. A proprietary license has been added to the program and a license key must be purchased for the full range of functions. The open source version under the MIT license is no longer available for download as a precompiled binary file.
