Poem of the River

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poem of the River was the seventh album (actually an EP) by the English band Felt . It followed the album Forever Breathes the Lonely Word , which relied heavily on the use of the Hammond organ, and was part of the band's "10 records in 10 years" plan. Produced by Mayo Thompson ( Red Krayola ), the work was released in 1987 on Creation Records . The album was later combined with the other nine Felt albums on Cherry Red and a live album named after the first song of the work ( Declaration ) in the box set Stains On A Decade and reissued.

The song She Lives By The Castle , a tender song about the end of a love, deals with the relationship between Lawrence and the singer of the band Saint Etienne , Sarah Cracknell .

Reactions

The album was largely welcomed by the critics. Sounds magazine described it as "somewhere between art and pop". Others found Mayo Thompson's production inadequate. For some listeners, the short album, despite possible production defects, was even considered to be the most rounded work of the band, which is known for light, dream-like and yet melancholy songs. The album was not a commercial success.
