The dwarf beards ( Pogoniulus ), also called dwarf bearded birds, are a genus within the African bearded birds. They are native to Africa and some have very large areas of distribution. Nine of the species are classified by the IUCN as not endangered ( least concern ), the species status of the tenth species is disputed: The description of the Makawa bearded bird is based on the discovery of a single male on September 6, 1964 near the River Mayau in northwest Zambia. Some ornithologists are considering the possibility that this is a very differently colored individual of the yellow-tufted dwarf beardling .

Appearance

The dwarf beards are among the smallest bearded birds . They have wing lengths of around five centimeters, the tail of most species is very short and rarely longer than three centimeters. The beaks are strong and pointed at the front. They are usually between 1 and 1.5 inches long. Females and males have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .

The stain Zwergbärtling has different than the others in the face tinkerbird neither white lines still a strikingly colored rump on. Males and females of this species have an olive to black face with fine yellow spots, the top of the head is greenish-black. The top of the body is dark yellowish green. The control feathers are brown with greenish yellow to yellow edges. The chin and throat are yellowish white. The chest and belly are yellowish with olive green spots. White facial markings are also missing on the Schlichtbartvogel , but this one has a yellow to golden yellow rump. This glowing rump color is found in most other species, only the red rump bearded bird is red. The rump is striped black and yellow in the red-fronted bearded bird and the yellow -fronted bearded bird .

Distribution area

Dwarf beards occur in Africa. The most northerly distribution area is the yellow-browed bearded bird, which is found in southwest Mauritania , Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia, among other places . The fiery-forehead bearded bird , which is found in the South African provinces of Natal and Cape Province, has the most southern distribution area . One of the smallest and noticeably fragmented areas of distribution is the yellow-bridged bearded bird , which occurs in three regions of Africa. It can be found from eastern Nigeria to the southwest and central part of Cameroon. He also lives in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the adjoining west of Rwanda and southwest Uganda, as well as in the Môco highlands in western Angola. The island of Bioko in the Gulf of Guinea is also inhabited by dwarf beards . The yellow tufted dwarf beardling, which has a very large distribution area, is also found on Zanzibar.

Way of life

Dwarf beards live mainly on fruits and also eat insects. Some of these are caught by them in flight. They are cave breeders who chop their nest holes into dead trees or branches.
