Poke [poʊˈkeɪ] ( Hawaiian : "cut into pieces") is a fish salad from Hawaii and has the status of a national dish there. It is a culinary fusion of the Japanese with the cuisine of the west coast of the United States .

preparation

Poke consists essentially of raw fish, shoyu soy sauce and sesame oil . In addition to tuna or salmon , octopus or shrimp are also used. Spring onions and sesame seeds as well as avocados and ginger are also commonly used. Poke is not acidified, which means the fish stays raw. Other ingredients are Kukui, the fruit of the light walnut tree , and Ogo algae (Gracilaria). Most of the time, poke is served on warm sushi rice. In Germany, various recipe variants are offered under the designation "Poke Bowl" or "Poké Bowl" and are considered to be a trend dish.
