Pokr Arteni ( Armenian Փոքր Արտենի 'Little Arteni') is the name for a volcanic peak in Armenia . In the Neolithic , when Armenia was one of the richest places of origin of obsidian , this was the most abundant deposit of volcanic material. Nevertheless, obsidian from the mining site in western Armenia did not reach Mesopotamia , which otherwise attracted the vitreous, volcanic stone in a wide area, but did the Kura - Araxes basin and Domuztepe in eastern Anatolia, 800 km away .

The mining site is located on the 4059 m high Aragaz volcano massif. This volcano gave birth to two main eruption centers, known as Mets Arteni and Pokr Arteni, also known as Big and Small Arteni, which reach heights of 2047 and 1757 meters. The two obsidian deposits were formed 1.4 and 1.1 million years ago. Pokr Arteni's obsidian alternates between opaque black and opaque gray, gray-brown, red, black, banded black and red, and translucent material. The material is ubiquitous and at the same time of the highest quality.
