The Polar Subglazialbecken ( english Polar Subglacial Basin ) is a large, by glacial ice completely material covered pool in the East Antarctic Wilkes Land . Its main extent lies between the Gamburzew Mountains and the Dominion Range .
US, British and Soviet scientists jointly determined its extent using seismic measurements between 1958 and 1961. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1961 after its proximity to the geographic South Pole .
