The Polikarpow BDP-2 ( Russian Поликарпов БДП-2 ) was a twin-engine Soviet transport aircraft during World War II . Similar to the German Me 323 Gigant, it was also the motorized further development of a cargo glider . BDP stands for Bojewoi Desantni Planjor (Боевой Десантный Планёр), combat airborne glider.

development

The motorless output model BDP-1 was created in 1941 and could carry 16 soldiers. Only a few copies were built of him. In the spring of 1943, Nikolai Polikarpow designed the BDP-2 equipped with two Schwezow M-11F engines, which was also designated as MP (Мотопланёр, Motoplanjor) or BDP-2M-11 .

The machine was designed as a high-decker and was made entirely of wood. The cabin located in the front upper part of the fuselage ensured a good all-round view. The structure had a load-bearing wooden spar with support brackets under the outer wings. The undercarriage consisted of two main wheels with double tires, which were thrown off after take-off, and a skid that helped the BDP-2 land.

Although the flight tests of the model from June 1943 by N. W. Gawrilow were successful and there was also the state acceptance in June 1943, series production was ultimately dispensed with, since the existing Antonov A-7 and Gribowski-G-11 cargo ships were the ones to be mastered Transport tasks were fully equal.
