The Polikarpow NB ( Russian Поликарпов НБ , project name " T ") is a Soviet bomber from the time of the Second World War . The abbreviation NB stands for Notschnoi Bombardirowschtschik (Ночной бомбардировщик), night bomber.

development

Nikolai Polikarpow began construction work on a twin-engine medium bomber in 1942. The type was designed as a shoulder-decker in a wood-metal composite construction and should be able to carry 3000 to 5000 kilograms of bombs. ASch-71 engines from Arkadi Schwezow with a take-off power of 2000 hp were intended as the drive for series production . The bow of the fuselage was generously glazed. The tail unit consisted of two vertical tail units at the ends of the horizontal tail unit. The rear wheel chassis was fully retractable, the main wheels drove into the motor gondolas. On the back of the fuselage was a rotating defense stand, another was housed in a glass floor pan.

In autumn 1943 the project phase was completed and construction of the prototype began. It was powered by two ASch-82A motors. The first flight took place in May 1944. The subsequent testing showed satisfactory performance and was completed in August of the same year. Nevertheless, the NB did not go into series production because the demand for twin-engined bombers was adequately covered by the Pe-2 and the Tu-2 .
